Restaurante Mirador Rio Blanco, San Miguel de los Bancos: June 26, 2008

This restaurant is a birder's dream, and his girlfriend's nightmare, I should add. Imagine birding in the forest all morning and then having lunch at a decent restaurant in full view of multiple nectar and fruit feeders; it's great for seeing tanagers at close range and terrible for having a conversation about something other than birds. Anyway, the restaurant is splendidly perched on top of the cliff above the Rio Blanco, and draws a steady stream of birders and tourists from the Mindo area; we even saw Paul Greenfield there, the heroic illustrator of Birds of Ecuador. Come for the birds, stay for the food.

Notable birds seen: Black-Cheeked Woodpecker, Ecuadorian Thrush, Guira Tanager, Blue-Necked Tanager, Thick-Billed Euphonia, Orange-Bellied Euphonia, Silver-Throated Tanger, Golden Tanager.
